6yo kindergartener son- iReady for English & math. It took three days or more to get through. Seemed accurate enough but way overwhelming for the amount of time it took. I’ll look for something else next year if I can.

Students age: 10 & 8. Standardized Test Used: IOWA + CoGAT. I really thought these tests were great, we ordered them from Seton testing. My 2nd grader did the physical test via snail mail and my older son who is in 4th grade did the online test. Each test took about 8 hours total over the course of three days, so they were comprehensive. The CoGAT is actually a cognitive test, it is often used to test giftedness. For us it was great to see a comparison between cognitive aptitude and then how they are performing academically (IOWA). The IOWA tests were comprehensive and gave a detailed picture of where my children are compared to others in their grade/their age, and also what we need to work on. Pairing with the CoGAT gave me an idea of how to change my teaching style to accommodate my learners. For example, my boys scored very well on their verbal aptitude, and not as well on their mathematics. So, I am learning how to tailor their math lessons to their strengths (using their linguistic aptitude to help them understand mathematical concepts). If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! We will do the IOWA test again next year.

TEST: IOWA Form E (K5 Spring, Grade 1 Fall)

I used this test with my Kindergartener. It was very easy to become a test administrator through the BJU Press website. I submitted and received an approval email within 24 hours. I ordered from the BJU Press website and it came in about a week. The kit included: Administrator Booklet, Student Booklet, and all necessary paperwork to fill out and send back. It was an extremely easy process!

The Administrator Booklet: all questions were in this booklet. You read the questions to the child.

The Child’s Booklet: all answers were in this booklet. There were 3-4 options as answers and the child would have to listen to the question. You can only read the questions 1 time so there are prompts to say things like “listen to the question” etc.

Other materials: there was a sheet of paper in there to record the testing sessions and a little booklet that had instructions.

We tested over 2 days. It took about 2 hours on the first day and 2.5 hours on the second day.

I really enjoyed giving the test and my son actually loved taking it. It was really nice to see where he is and what we need to work on moving forward.

I will say this - I got an email over 3 weeks ago stating they have received our packet and we still do not have results. It says to expect results between 2-4 weeks once they have received the packet. We are closing in on that 4 weeks and I will be calling them on Monday for an update. So when they say it takes 2-4 weeks it takes every bit of that so make sure when you choose this test (the paper test, not online test) you have ample time to receive the results.

As far as I know, it does not take that long if you do the online version, which is what we will probably do next year!

Overall, I have enjoyed this test and will use it or the online version next year for my boys.

NWEA Measure of Academic Progress (MAP)

  • PARENT REVIEW

We used the MAP test from Homeschool Boss for my 5th and 2nd grader. It was their first time taking a test. It took about 45 min for each section. I had results the next day. It was easy to log on to. We use a literature based curriculum so the questions on the test were very different from what they are used to. The questions ranged from drop down menus and icons to Greek and Latin roots of words. I was overall happy with it and they scored high but I will probably do the Classical Learning Test next year as it more aligns with their curriculum.

    Age: Kindergarten, 6

    MAP test.

Contrary to all the amazing reviews I’ve seen for this test, we didn’t like it. It took about 90 mins for each test. I felt it was far too long for a child in kindergarten. Even with breaks my daughter felt tired and frustrated. Also the increasing difficulty of questions hurt her confidence at times. She scored in the 98th & 99th percentile but the testing experience was not super enjoyable. I like the idea of the increasing difficulty of questions but I don’t think it works for all kids.

We used homeschool Boss Map testing for my kindergartener. It was amazing. It was 45 questions and took about 45-60 minutes for each test. We did two different days. I loved that it read to my child and he was able to navigate it well. There were a few questions he didn’t understand, but mainly bc he didn’t listen to the full instructions. It was the easiest process for us using it first time!

Just did our MAP testing for Kindergarten. Thought I'd post about the experience here since I know a lot of people are debating which test to take.

How to get the test: You go to the Homeschool Boss website and sign up and they act as a "school" so you can request the test. Once I knew that it was pretty smooth sailing. 60 bucks for the basic reading/math test.

Administering the test: Super easy. They send you a link and you log in. Had some issues with audio, but reloading the question fixed it when this happened. It's untimed, but takes between 1 hour-1.5 hours for each section. You can take as many breaks as you want.

Taking the test: Pretty stressful for my learner, tbh. One, it's very long for young kids (but so are all the other standardized tests). Also, it's an "adaptive test," which means the questions adjust to match the child's ability. In theory, I like this (more personalized results); but the reality was a little different. I didn't realize that the "end goal" for the computer is that the student gets 50% of the questions wrong by the end. We weren't expecting that, so my learner was really upset when he ran into material that he had never studied before. After talking about how he wasn't supposed to know everything on the test, he was a bit calmer though ("Mom, I think this question is college level!").

Test Results: Surprisingly accurate. They lined up with where I thought my learner was. The missed questions on the test also helped point out some things I'd overlooked. If you're invested in getting the highest score possible, I highly recommend taking a practice test. There were a few questions that my son missed because the terms used were unfamiliar or were curriculum specific (specifically, on the math test there were questions about "fact families" which I hadn't heard of before). He also skipped questions at the end because he was getting bored and frustrated.

Final take aways: All in all, I'd still choose it over the CAT or Iowa because the norms are based on 2020, rather than over 20 years ago. Just make sure your learner is mentally prepared to deal with questions beyond their current level and a very long test.

My kindergartener completed the testing requirement this week and I wanted to share my experience. She did the NWEA Map Reading and Math exams at our home.

We used Homeschool Boss for both the reading and math tests. I started by emailing sales@homesschoolboss.com and asked for an invoice. They were very prompt and I had an invoice for both tests ($60 total) by the next day. I then submitted this invoice for reimbursement and it was approved in ClassWallet in about 3 days.

I created an account on Homeschool Boss and scheduled the reading test for Tuesday morning and the math test for Wednesday morning. Homeschool Boss sends you an email after sceheduling your tests to ensure your device will be working correctly for the tests. I personally had to update my browser and turn off the pop-up blocker.

About 15 minutes before each test time they sent me a text message with her log in and password info.

There were around 45 questions on each the reading and math tests and it took my daughter about an hour with each. She could also take breaks as needed.

You immediately get your score but they send you access to a more detailed report around 24 hours later.

I hope this is helpful for someone.

I just wanted to say that we tried NWEA Map testing.

One of our kids attended a micro school previously and they used iReady. My child said the diagnostics took a whole day to complete for one subject. So a total of 2 days to complete for math and reading. The results we received were barely a paragraph. I really did not know what direction we would need to move in to help them grow.

I decided to administer the NWEA Map after people recommended it here. Each section has taken no more than an hour. The scoring is much more user friendly and I got a 6 page report on reading so far, awaiting Math.

I also opted for a Language Arts test for an additional $10.

Very happy with this form of testing!

We tested through homeschool boss. Getting the invoice was easy and scheduling worked well too. We ended up testing a bit later one day but it was still fine (my personal computer is set for ET for simplicity in my VA work and so it went off of ET not CT)

My son is in kindergarten and I explained to him that there will be questions that he doesn’t know and that it may be a significant amount of them. We had done the practice tests of it before hand too so he had a it of an idea what it was like. He really enjoyed them both (it was 2 days) and did well.

The test is progressive and has unlimited time. He blazed through them though in about 20-30 min. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing but I let him do his thing with it. It was intuitive enough for him that he didn’t get frustrated.

The test results are thorough and it was cool to see some of the skills that he had mastered beyond expectations.

We tested a few weeks ago and yesterday he was asking if we could test again and was upset that we weren’t doing it then.

Thrive Academics Performance Series (Developed by Scantron Corp)

  • PARENT REVIEW

I used Thrive Academics Performance Series for my kindergartner and 5th grader. It was very easy and fast. Each test took approximately 30 minutes give or take. It is adaptive and so my 5th grader was quickly given algebra problems that he had no idea what to do with. We had already discussed so it didn’t bother him. He just guessed as best he could. I told him it got harder because he was doing well and that helped. He understood and it was fine. Reading was easy and fast for him. It gives you a number grade like 2935 and you email them to let them know your child is done and they send you back the report.

For my Kindergartner, the math got very hard very quickly. She had never taken a test before so I told her to just pick the answer she thought was best. Within the first 5 questions she was given a problem to reduce a fraction. But again, she didn’t care. The reading foundations was more age appropriate and increased in challenge a little later. Took about 20 minutes for each.

I would 100% use this test again because it was so fast and easy. If you truly want to assess your students’ progress, however, and care about the score, I would choose a different test. It did not seem thorough enough to truly evaluate anything meaningful. But overall, it was a stress-free experience for us.

We also did the Thrive Academics Performance. Ages 17,15,14,12.

I also prepared mine by saying that it gets harder the better you do. My 12 yr old ended up reading 9 sections.

I would add that they give you a score at the end. Our math scores all seemed way higher than the reading but that didn't mean they didn't do well!

Thrive was quick to respond to all emails and I got my results back that day.

A great thing about this test is you pay the $25 and you can use it that whole school year. You can test your kids as often as you would like but they recommend 10 weeks between tests to reflect knowledge growth.

    7 year old first grader.

We did the thrive testing. It was less than an hour for each assessment. I felt like some of the wording was confusing for my daughter in the reading foundations section and they assumed that she had base knowledge that wasn’t pertinent to our daily lives. But overall it was user friendly and the results were clear and informative. Also the $25 charge was nice!

My kid has ADHD so any test takes a while. This test took about an hour for both sections. There is the ability to pause if a break is needed. The results put him about where I thought he would be.

Simple, cheap, and easy to navigate.
