Baketivity kits

The kiddos had a baking day yesterday. The older kids all chose one of their kits and picked a little one as an assistant. The assistants don’t always assist ‘well’ but they sure like trying. This round they baked cupcakes, made cake pops and made granola bars.

With the premeasured dry ingredients, it’s easy for my boy here who is 11 to help his 3-year-old sister bake without incident. And trust me that girl can cause an incident.

Miss Klara Faye is a mess, but the kit allowed Kel to not only practice baking, but practice also following instructions and practice teaching what he knows to someone else. I have found older children absorb information better when they get to TEACH a small child how to do a task they have learned. It’s such a vital life skill. And Kel absolutely LOVES to eat so any form of baking and cooking are perfect places for him to practice following directions on his own. With a dx of level 1 ASD and ADHD practicing those skills are high on our list of educational needs.

Getting a teen to participate in anything is always a challenge, Add in ASD, ADHD and ODD and its a while entire chore. But the cake pops were enough fun she helped her 8 year old and 3 year old sisters make this batch. Which were all eaten very quickly!!

Every big kid and their helper completed their kit without needing my assistance. So, I was free to be damage control and prevent the blasted dog from stealing any bites in the process. He knows he isn’t allowed chocolate, but does he listen??? But I am not cleaning up Hershey squirts!!!
